To make a day of it

Burgruine Hohenburg (Homburg) stands in Homburg (Saarpfalz-Kreis), in Saarland, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Hohenburg ruins overlook Homburg from the Schlossberg, a rocky outcrop rising above the well-known Schlossberg Caves. Originally the seat of the counts of Homburg, the site later became a Renaissance palace and then a fortified stronghold under the counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken. Captured by Louis XIV in 1679, it was enlarged under the direction of Vauban before being dismantled in the early eighteenth century. Visitors today find remnants of walls, ditches, casemates and the piers of the former drawbridge spread across a site roughly 230 metres long.
