To make a day of it

Burg Lichtenberg stands in Thallichtenberg (Landkreis Kusel), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Lichtenberg Castle rises above the village of Thallichtenberg, in the Kusel district, on a rocky spur of the Nordpfälzer Bergland. At 425 metres in length, it is the largest castle ruin in Germany, formed by the gradual merging of two separate strongholds built between the 12th and 14th centuries. A fire in 1799 left the complex in ruins, but the square keep has since been restored and can be climbed, giving views over Kusel and the surrounding hills. The site today also houses a museum of Palatinate folk music and a natural history museum.

What to know

  • The keep, about 33 metres high, can be climbed during the day as a viewing tower.
  • The site also includes a youth hostel, a restaurant and two museums housed in the outbuildings.
  • A large car park lies east of the castle, along the road connecting Thallichtenberg and Körborn.
  • Walking access from the nearby villages follows forest paths, with varying elevation gain depending on the starting point.
  • Since much of the site is a ruin, visitors should expect some uneven ground when exploring.
