To make a day of it

Burg Frauenburg stands in Frauenberg (Landkreis Birkenfeld), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Frauenburg is a medieval ruin standing on a narrow rocky spur above the valleys of the Aubach and Ellenbach streams, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Built before 1327 by the Counts of Sponheim, it became the widow's residence of Countess Loretta von Sponheim from 1331 onward, later serving as an administrative seat before being destroyed in 1673 during the Wildfangfehde conflict. Its rectangular layout, the surviving round corner towers and the deep ditch that once guarded the vulnerable side can still be traced on site. The 33-metre-high south tower can be climbed by arrangement for views over the surrounding countryside.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin with no known fixed opening hours.
  • Reaching the spur involves a walk on foot, so some physical effort should be expected.
  • Climbing the 33-metre south tower is only possible by prior arrangement.
  • A deep ditch remains on the side that once faced attack, worth noting when walking around.
  • The site is protected as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
