Burg Bosselstein rises above the Oberstein district of Idar-Oberstein, perched on a steep rocky outcrop over the Felsenkirche, the rock-cut church. Also known as Burg Stein or Altes Schloss, this ruin was built in the 12th century by the lords of Stein as their feudal seat. Left uninhabited from 1600 onward, it retains a stump of its round keep along with remnants of the residential hall and curtain wall. From the site, views stretch over the Nahe valley toward the neighbouring Schloss Oberstein, together forming a striking pairing of ruins.
