To make a day of it

Schloss Oberstein stands in Idar-Oberstein (Landkreis Birkenfeld), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Oberstein rises above the upper district of Idar-Oberstein, perched on a rocky spur over the Nahe valley, close to the well-known rock chapel. Built in the early 14th century by the House of Daun-Oberstein, it served as a comital residence before being reduced to an administrative seat. Destroyed by fire in the mid-19th century after already suffering damage from French troops, the building has been under continuous restoration since the early 1980s. Its triangular layout, corner towers and late Gothic gatehouse oriel still reflect its original defensive architecture.
