Burg Alt-Wolfstein overlooks the Lauter valley at its narrowest point, on the slopes of the Königsberg near Wolfstein. Likely built around 1160/70 under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to oversee imperial lands around Kaiserslautern, it was destroyed in 1504 during a territorial dispute and never rebuilt. Its five-sided bergfried, still standing at twenty metres, remains the main surviving example of this Hohenstaufen-era construction, and its platform offers a wide view over the surrounding countryside.
