Merburg stands in Homburg (Saarpfalz-Kreis), in Saarland, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Merburg is a small ruined castle perched on a sandstone outcrop called the Malafels, some twelve metres above the Lambsbach stream near Kirrberg. Excavated and restored between 1975 and 1980, the site still shows the remains of an octagonal keep and an inner defensive wall. Though one of the smallest fortifications in Saarland, its layout reveals a fairly elaborate defence system, with ditches and an outer bailey facing Kirrberg. It preceded the Hohenburg on Homburg's Schlossberg, which later became the residence of the Counts of Homburg.
