Frankenstein Castle stands in ruins on a rocky spur of the Palatinate Forest, above the village of Frankenstein in Rhineland-Palatinate. Visitors can still make out the 13th century palas, with its lancet windows and multi-storey chimney, as well as the remains of a 12th century keep reached by a stone staircase cut into the rock. Uninhabited since the 16th century, the site can be visited freely and bears the marks of a turbulent history of sieges, destruction and successive occupations.
