Stauf Castle stands in ruins on a rocky spur above the Eisbach valley, near the village of Stauf. Recorded as early as around 1012 under the name castellum Stoufenburc, it ranks among the oldest known fortified structures in the Palatinate region. Destroyed during the German Peasants' War in 1525, it later served for a time as a source of building stone before its remains were protected.
