To make a day of it

Alter Schlossberg (Teichwolframsdorf) stands in Mohlsdorf-Teichwolframsdorf (Landkreis Greiz), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Alter Schlossberg marks the site of a former motte castle, now reduced to a ruin, set at 325 metres above sea level by the Krebsbach stream in the village of Teichwolframsdorf. The stone walls and tower foundations still visible in the 19th century were removed by the landowners of the time. What remains is an artificial mound roughly six metres high, once shielded by a pond and, on its northeastern side, by a defensive ditch. The spot now lies on a private plot along the Ronneburger Straße, near the old mill, today the site of the local fire station.

What to know

  • The site sits on private land near the Ronneburger Straße, next to the local fire station.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities, as this is an open-air archaeological site.
