To make a day of it
Burgruine Reichenfels stands in Hohenleuben (Landkreis Greiz), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgruine Reichenfels stands on a rocky spur above the Triebes valley, a short distance from the center of Hohenleuben. Probably built as early as the 12th century by the Vogts of Weida, it served as the administrative seat of the small lordship of Reichenfels before passing through several noble families, including the Counts of Reuss. Only fragments of walls and the remains of a keep survive from the medieval stronghold, since a 19th-century attempt to rebuild it as a neo-Romanesque castle was itself torn down in the early 20th century. Today the ruins share the site with a local history museum housed in the former farm buildings.
What to know
- The site combines a medieval ruin with a local history museum housed in the former outbuildings.
- A chestnut-lined avenue has linked central Hohenleuben to the site since 1770, roughly one kilometer long.
- The keep and the 19th-century neo-Romanesque castle no longer exist; only wall fragments remain.
- The grounds are still used today for cultural events on the forecourt near the museum.
- No verified information on opening hours, admission fees, or accessibility is available for this listing.
