To make a day of it

Oberes Schloss (Greiz) stands in Greiz (Landkreis Greiz), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Oberes Schloss towers over the town of Greiz from a rocky spur above the Weiße Elster river, its medieval keep still standing at the very tip of the crag. Seen from different sides the building tells different stories: defensive and fortress like from the north and west, but marked by Renaissance gables on its east wing, a legacy of its gradual shift from stronghold to representative residence. The complex is arranged around an upper and a lower courtyard, linked by a passage cut between the rock and the outer buildings, with traces of the old fortifications still visible in places. Part of the structure continues to be used as housing today.
