Built for Louis XIV as a hunting lodge on the edge of the Saint-Germain-en-Laye forest, the Château du Val changed hands and shapes over the centuries: raised in height for the Prince de Beauvau in the late 18th century, then substantially reworked inside during the Second Empire for Achille Fould. Its park still bears the touch of painter Hubert Robert, who redesigned it in the 18th century. The estate is now run as a hotel and is not open for visits as a heritage site.
