Soudun castle stands on a height overlooking the Creuse valley, in Néons-sur-Creuse, on the border between Touraine, Berry and Poitou. First recorded around the year 1000 as Uxellodunium, the site was long contested and later fell into ruin, before being rebuilt in the early twentieth century by the archivist Louis-Henri Moranvillé in a manner close to that of Viollet-le-Duc. Its round keep, visible from miles away, and the nearby Romanesque chapel with its rounded tile roof make up the surviving buildings today.
