In Rongères, in the Allier department, the Château du Méage stands with its rectangular main building flanked by towers above moats fed by a stream. Built on the site of an earlier medieval stronghold whose lordship dates back to the 13th century, the present structure was raised in the late 15th or early 16th century, with a gateway added at the end of the 16th century and tall rectangular windows cut in during the classical period. A spiral staircase sits within a square tower, and the grounds also include outbuildings, a dovecote and a water system of moats and basins.
