In Mauguio, the remains of the former castle of the count-bishops of Melgueil, an episcopal residence built on the site of a 12th and 13th century seigneurial fortress, are now shared between three private properties. The surviving structures mostly date from the 15th to 17th centuries and show, across their façades, a vaulted hall with ribbed ogives, an octagonal spiral staircase tower and an arcaded gallery. Carved corbels, a late Gothic mullioned window and, upstairs, a monumental corbelled fireplace can also be made out. The site is best appreciated from the outside, as the buildings remain private dwellings.
