The Grammont estate, east of Montpellier on the left bank of the Lez river, preserves traces of a priory founded in 1174 by the Grandmontains under the name Notre-Dame-de-Montaubérou. The château at its centre passed through several vineyard estates over the centuries before becoming, from the 1980s onward, a large area devoted to entertainment and sport. Today visitors find a chapel rebuilt in the late 19th century, now used for Orthodox Christian worship, along with a 19th-century marble statue standing in the park.

What to know

• The château functions as an annex town hall for civil weddings, and its gardens are maintained though there is no organised tourist visit as such.
• The estate also hosts the Zénith Sud concert hall, a theatre, sports grounds and the training centre of Montpellier Hérault Sport Club football team.
• The Sainte-Philothée chapel, rebuilt in the late 19th century, now serves Greek Orthodox worship and is not open as an ordinary heritage site.
• The listed marble statue Hécate et Cerbère stands at the highest point of a fitness trail within the park.
• Access is via avenue Pierre-Mendès-France, near the A9 motorway interchange, in an area now built up around the Odysseum district.
