To make a day of it
Château de Vouilly stands in Vouilly (Calvados), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Documented as early as the 11th century near Isigny-sur-Mer, the Château de Vouilly owes its present appearance to alterations made by the Cussy family in the second half of the 18th century, including an orangery, ornamental pavilions and a formal garden. The estate is chiefly remembered for the summer of 1944, when the orangery housed the transmitter used by Allied war correspondents and General Bradley held press conferences there. A preserved Underwood typewriter and a largely unaltered press room still recall that episode. The property, now partly run as a bed and breakfast, also retains a moat and a dovecote with 750 nesting holes.
