To make a day of it

Château de Canchy stands in Canchy (Calvados), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The château de Canchy consists today of a single surviving wing of a large 16th-century fortified residence, roughly a hundred metres long, flanked by two square corner towers. The facade still shows a central pavilion topped with machicolations and pierced by a large and a small doorway, remnants of a stronghold that once guarded access to the Esque valley. Slit openings can still be seen in the surviving stairways, once used to defend the passage.

What to know

  • The building is protected as a listed historic monument, with the square towers specifically named in the protection order.
  • Opening hours, admission fees and access conditions are not specified in the available information.
  • The structure has suffered several partial collapses, including a roof in 1970 and a tower in 1925, which explains its current ruined state.
  • The site today mostly consists of farm buildings, as the former château lost its gardens and wings over the centuries.
