Le château a été acheté par Lavoisier qui y a mené plusieurs expériences de chimie, et notamment de séchage de tabac. A cet effet, il aurait fait aménager la tour d'angle (pigeonnier désaffecté). D'un édifice de la fin du 15e siècle, il ne reste, à l'extérieur, que les fenêtres de l'étage de comble ; à l'intérieur, un escalier à vis noyé dans la maçonnerie au moment des transformations plus tardives. L'ensemble a été remanié au 19e siècle. Le château, qui conserve à l'ouest des douves réaménagées à la fin du 18e siècle, devait être ceinturé à l'origine d'un système défensif complet comportant plusieurs tours d'angle. Il reste aujourd'hui une grande tour couronnée d'un chemin de ronde à mâchicoulis, archères, et petites baies rectangulaires formant créneaux. C'est vraisemblablement à la fin du Moyen-Age que la tour a été transformée en pigeonnier, avec plus de 2000 nichoirs en brique. A la fin du 18e siècle, Lavoisier fit plâtrer les cases inférieures sur une hauteur de deux mètres pour installer un laboratoire.
