Château de Sain-Bel stands in Sain-Bel (Rhône), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
What the French Ministry of Culture records
Edifice construit vers 1190, faisant partie d'une ceinture de fortifications destinées à protéger le territoire de l'abbaye bénédictine de Savigny. Aux 14e et 15e siècles, le lieu devient la résidence des abbés de Savigny, et connaît une période de reconstruction ou de réparation. A la Révolution, le château est vendu comme bien national. Au milieu du 19e siècle, les bâtiments sont transformés en habitations. Le bâtiment se présente comme un quadrilatère irrégulier enfermant une cour, cantonné d'une tour carrée, dite la tour de l'Horloge (15e) , et d'une tour semi-circulaire dit la tour du Colombier (15e-16e). La tour des Empereurs autrefois située au sud, a été démolie au 19e siècle. Le bâtiment sud, qui abritait le logis de l'abbé, a été en partie reconstruit vers 1850. La chapelle a conservé sa porte du 15e siècle et présente des vestiges d'un décor peint du 17e siècle.
