To make a day of it

Château de Rochambeau stands in Thoré-la-Rochette (Loir-et-Cher), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 18th century, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing above the Loir river at Thoré-la-Rochette, the Château de Rochambeau carries the name of the marshal who led French forces at Yorktown. Built in the 16th century and later altered in the 18th with two square pavilions and Mansart-style roofs, it still holds the marshal's bedroom, untouched since his death in 1807. Facing the house, a curved neoclassical retaining wall built in 1841 links two towers around a chapel and leads to a rock-cut amphitheatre known as the puisard. A lime-tree avenue planted by Rochambeau himself, now two centuries old, runs alongside the river for nearly three kilometres.
