To make a day of it

Château de Rioux stands in Rioux (Charente-Maritime), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 17th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

North of the village of Rioux, in the Charente-Maritime region, this 15th century château retains the look of a defensive stronghold, with its moat and a two arched bridge that replaced the former drawbridge. The main building, flanked by round towers and a small central square tower, stands within a rectangular enclosure once reinforced with curtain walls pierced with gun loops. The estate passed through many hands over the centuries, from the Didonne family to later owners who altered or restored it.
