In Nieul-lès-Saintes, this 14th century fortified castle illustrates medieval military architecture in the Saintonge region, where such fortified structures have become uncommon. Originally built by Jean Chaudrier, the former residence of the lords of Nieul retains its irregular polygonal enclosure lined with towers, its dry moat and a rampart walk still visible on two square towers. Inside the courtyard, the living quarters and outbuildings set against the wall reflect later alterations.
