What the French Ministry of Culture records
Le château actuel ne semble pas remonter au-delà du 14e siècle. Au début du 19e siècle, le château devient ferme puis est peu à peu abandonné et pillé. L'édifice était entouré de douves au passage assuré par un pont-levis. Une partie importante de l'enceinte fortifiée, appuyée de tours carrées et rondes, subsiste. Les bâtiments à l'intérieur de la cour, remaniés aux 16e et 17e siècles, présentent une structure très complexe. La rareté des sites fortifiés de cette importance en Saintonge, donne un intérêt tout particulier à ce château.
