In the town of La Riche, on the edge of Tours, the Plessis-lès-Tours castle retains only one wing of what was once Louis XI's favourite residence, where the king died in 1483. The surviving building, with its original stair tower, is a small remnant of the much larger royal residence once frequented by Charles VIII, Louis XII, and the States-General of 1506. Visitors can see the vaulted dungeon traditionally linked to the imprisonment of Cardinal La Balue.
