Once a medieval stronghold reshaped during the Renaissance and again refitted in the 19th century, Saché castle owes its fame to Honoré de Balzac, who stayed there repeatedly between 1825 and 1848 as the guest of his friend Jean de Margonne. A museum devoted to the writer now occupies the very rooms he used, including his bedroom and the main drawing room. The grounds still hold a round tower and remnants of the moat from the earliest building, along with a park overlooking the Indre valley that inspired his novel Le Lys dans la vallée.
