The Château de La Bourdaisière stands at Montlouis-sur-Loire on the site of a medieval stronghold from the 13th and 14th centuries, rebuilt in the 16th century and then largely reconstructed during the Restoration period by Baron Angellier, after earlier demolitions ordered by the Duke of Choiseul. Gabrielle d'Estrées and Henri IV stayed there in 1598, before the estate passed through several owners until its rescue at the end of the 20th century. Visitors come today less for the architecture, partly dating from the 19th century, than for the gardens recreated from historical records, the conservatory of heritage tomato varieties, and the vineyard farmed biodynamically. The 16th-century outbuildings, the old chapel, the moat and the monumental gateway to the park still bear witness to earlier centuries.
