What the French Ministry of Culture records

A partir de 1211 et pendant quatre ans, le château subit le siège des troupes de Simon de Montfort descendu dans le Midi lutter contre l'hérésie albigeoise. Un deuxième siège eut lieu en 1228, mené par le roi. Bien qu'Amaury de Monfort eût cédé au roi de France ses droits sur le Midi, Penne refusa d'ouvrir ses portes aux Français. Plus tard, la forteresse fut également occupée par les Anglais et les routiers. Son importance diminua avec l'usage de l'artillerie. Penne finit démantelée. Une partie des courtines des remparts est encore visible, de même que la porte principale avec les deux tours qui la flanquaient, et ce qui servit de donjon.
