The Château de Saint-Michel-de-Vax, in the Tarn department, preserves the memory of a medieval stronghold that became a family residence from the 17th century onward. Its main interest lies in its history: General Lacombe-Saint-Michel, a figure of the French Revolution and First Empire, was born and died here, and his family shaped the estate until the mid-19th century. The writer Claude Simon, a descendant of the family and Nobel laureate in literature, mentioned the place in his novel Les Géorgiques. Of the original structure, only two rounded towers, cut down in height, and a main dwelling arranged around a now grassy courtyard remain.
