To make a day of it

Castella stands in Saint-Sulpice (Tarn), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. Adult admission costs 7.5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on September 5, 2026.

The Castella sits on a rise above the Agout river at Saint-Sulpice-la-Pointe, on the site of a motte first raised in the 13th century by Sicard Alaman. Little remains above ground after the Wars of Religion and later brick-scavenging, apart from the gothic-arched walls of a former seigneurial chapel and the base of a keep pierced with cross-shaped loopholes. The real draw lies underground: a 142-metre tunnel cut through marl and sandstone, containing storage pits, wells and chambers, open to guided visits. This gallery, the largest of its kind in the Tarn, is tied to the tale of Jeanne de Boulogne, said to have minted counterfeit coins there in the 15th century.
