To make a day of it

Château de Montferrand stands in Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers (Hérault), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages). Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur of the pic Saint-Loup at 400 metres above sea level, the ruins of the château de Montferrand overlook the village of Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers. Built in the 12th century by the counts of Melgueil, the fortress went through the Wars of Religion before being dismantled on the orders of Louis XIV in the early 18th century. Surrounded by scrubland and cliffs, the site today stands as a piece of medieval memory rather than a place open for visits.
