Château de Londres stands in Notre-Dame-de-Londres (Hérault), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Built in the sixteenth century on the remains of medieval fortifications, this castle of the Roquefeuil family occupies the northern part of the village of Notre-Dame-de-Londres. Its defensive architecture combines two imposing rectangular towers at the northeast and southwest corners with two round turrets at the opposite angles, completed by corbelled wall-walks. Once connected to the neighboring chapel by an enclosed passage, it bears within its interiors the trace of later modifications, notably the opening of windows in the eighteenth century and the preservation of two painted ceilings from the following century.
What to know
- The defensive structure responds to tensions from sixteenth-century civil wars, with defenses particularly oriented toward the northern town.
- The interior contains two painted ceilings from the seventeenth century, which are protected as historical monuments.
- The original rectangular towers were preserved and reinforced during the sixteenth-century reconstruction work.
