In Paray-le-Frésil, in the Allier department, this late 16th century château combines red and blue brickwork with round towers and a square tower, a remnant of an older medieval keep. Owned by the same family since 1640, it went through 18th century alterations and a fire in 1968 that led to its reconstruction in its original proportions. Inside, a library room with wood panelling survived the blaze. Georges Simenon is said to have set here the childhood of Inspector Maigret's father.
