The château de Nançay, in the Cher département, stands on the site of a fortified house first recorded in 1388 on land held by the La Châtre family. The present building dates from the late 15th century, when a fortification project authorised a century earlier was finally carried out. Left in ruins for a time, it was rebuilt in the 19th century around older remains and still holds a monumental interior staircase in its south wing. Nearby, a former farm building known as the Grenier de Villâtre forms part of the protected ensemble.
