Set in a forest of the Cher department, the château de la Verrerie stands with its late 15th and early 16th century buildings beside a lake that mirrors its façades. Built for the Stuart family, Scottish lords who came to serve Charles VII of France, it illustrates the shift from late Gothic to Renaissance style, especially in the arcaded wing raised in the 1520s. The Vogüé family, owners since the 19th century, had a further wing added by architect Ernest Sanson and still live on the estate, part of which, including several reception rooms, is open to visitors.
