What the French Ministry of Culture records

Cette terre dépendant de la seigneurie d'Aubigny-sur-Nère, fut donnée par Charles VII en 1423 au connétable de l'armée d'Ecosse, Jean Stuart. La demeure d'agrément, centre d'un domaine forestier, agricole et industriel, fut probablement construite entre 1495 et 1500 (corps de logis central et chapelle), pour Bérault Stuart de Darnley, capitaine des archers de la garde écossaise, lieutenant général du royaume de Naples. L'aile des galeries avec ses deux pavillons et l'ouvrage d'entrée furent ajoutés vers 1520-1525 pour son neveu et successeur, Robert Stuart de Lennox. L'aile des galeries, côté parc, fut agrandie à partir de 1894 par Paul-Ernest Sanson, pour Louis, marquis de Vogüé. C'est à lui et à son fils Melchior qu'est due la restauration de la chapelle et celle de ses peintures, confiée vers 1930 à Ypermann.
