To make a day of it

Château de Mursay stands in Échiré (Deux-Sèvres), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On the left bank of the Sèvre niortaise, in Échiré, the ruins of the château de Mursay recall a 16th-century manor house where Françoise d'Aubigné, the future Madame de Maintenon, spent her early years under the guardianship of her aunt Madame de Villette. Henri IV also stayed there. Visitors can see a raised rectangular platform flanked by turrets and a main building bordered by four unequal towers, some of which still hold rooms decorated with wood panelling and fireplaces. Long threatened with collapse, the site has been the object of preservation efforts since the 1990s, led by local associations and public authorities.
