To make a day of it

Château de Montméry stands in Ambazac (Haute-Vienne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Montméry castle, in Ambazac, owes its existence to the American porcelain manufacturer Théodore Haviland, who had this large complex built in the late 19th century from designs linked to architect Richard Morris Hunt, carried out by the Limousin architect Ménissier. Its two right-angled wings, punctuated by towers and rounded bays, freely combine Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance references, extending into the interior decoration. The surrounding landscaped park still holds the remains of an 11th and 12th century motte castle, among the best preserved in the Haute-Vienne region.
