Standing on a hill overlooking the Rhône south of the Malarage gap, the Château de Mérieu rises a short distance from the village of Creys, in the Isère. Its origins go back to the 12th century, and the estate has never changed hands through sale, passing instead by marriage or inheritance from the Meyrieu family to the Saint Germain family, then to the Quinsonas and finally to the Saint-Pern. Three wings arranged in a U shape form the medieval core, completed in the 17th century by a lower wing that closes off the courtyard and serves as the entrance, its porch topped by a gallery flanked by two turrets. Inside, the apartments retain layouts and decoration dating from the end of Louis XIV's reign.
