In Saint-Vite, on the banks of the Lot, the château de Lapoujade preserves the remains of a medieval fortified house that once guarded a ford and a mill. Built around an inner courtyard, it retains on its first floor a room from the original dwelling, complete with a Gothic fireplace and a mullioned window. In the 16th century, the La Goutte family, who held positions at the royal court, added an open gallery in an Italianate style overlooking the courtyard. Set against the river, the building reflects successive changes from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance.
