South of Montpellier, the Château de la Piscine is an 18th century mansion built for François Gaspard Richer de Belleval, president of the local chamber of accounts, designed by the architect Jean Antoine Giral, who also created the Peyrou esplanade in Montpellier. Completed in 1771, the building stands at the end of a formal courtyard closed off by a wrought iron gate, framed by sculpted façades and French style gardens restored in the early 20th century. Visitors come for the classical symmetry of the north and south façades, the grand salon and green study with their original decoration, and the grounds with their basins, statues and twin winged pavilion.
