To make a day of it

Château de la Groie stands in Ingrandes (Vienne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The château de la Groie, a former stronghold of the vicomty of Châtellerault, retains remains from a long architectural history. Founded in the late 14th century, it underwent partial reconstruction in the 18th century on a more ambitious overall plan. Today, the two corner towers of the 15th-century perimeter wall survive, flanking the eastern buildings, along with the 18th-century entrance gate and former outbuildings converted into agricultural structures.

What to know

  • The monument is not open to visitors: only the 15th-century corner towers and the 18th-century entrance gate are listed and visible from outside.
  • You will see two machiolated towers with narrow arrow slits that marked the boundary of the former fortified perimeter.
  • Part of the old buildings has been converted into agricultural use with storage cellars, visible depending on access conditions to the site.
  • The castle was sold as national property during the Revolution, which explains the partial state of the current ruins.
