At Liernolles, in the Allier department, the Château de la Forêt de Viry retains the look of a fortified manor house built in the 15th and 16th centuries and altered in the 17th. Its quadrangular enclosure, flanked by round towers and two attached square towers, a trace of a former shared lordship, can be seen from outside. A gate tower that once controlled a drawbridge marks the entrance. The revolutionary Marc Antoine Baudot was born here in 1765, his father being a tenant farmer on the estate.
