To make a day of it

Château de l'Isle stands in Saint-Denis-en-Val (Loiret), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Saint-Denis-en-Val, in the Loiret department, the ruins of the Château de l'Isle stand on what was once an island in the Loire, where bailiff Jacques Groslot began building his residence in 1530. During the Wars of Religion the place became a stronghold of Protestantism around Orléans, before being largely swept away by a Loire flood in 1866. What remains today, listed as a historic monument, gives a glimpse of 16th-century architecture now reduced mostly to ruins.
