What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château est une reconstitution de style néo-roman réalisée par l'architecte Karl Erich Loebell. Le premier château est attesté dès 1125. Détruit par les Strasbourgeois en 1378, il est reconstruit puis ponctuellement occupé ou délaissé après 1464. Vendue comme bien national, la ruine est acquise par le maréchal napoléonien Clarke, que Napoléon fait comte de Hunebourg. Le donjon médiéval est alors démoli, et un pavillon de chasse est bâti en contrebas du château, tandis qu'une grotte d'amour est aménagée dans le parc.
