To make a day of it

Château de Hartmannswiller stands in Hartmannswiller (Haut-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century, third quarter of the 16th century, first quarter of the 18th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

North of the village of Hartmannswiller, in the Haut-Rhin, this castle traces back to a medieval lordship first recorded in 1288, though the structure seen today largely dates from the 16th century, with alterations following the Thirty Years' War and again in the early 18th century. Visitors can see an L-shaped main building with chamfered corner stones, a round tower housing a spiral staircase whose doorway bears the date 1562, and the remains of a square tower and a pepperpot turret. Left undamaged during the First World War despite its closeness to the Vieil Armand front, it served as a shelter for villagers at the time.
