In Frespech, in the Lot-et-Garonne department, the remains of the medieval castle bear witness to nearly three centuries of rivalry between major southwestern families, from the Durfort to the Montferrand. Visitors can see a round-arched gate of honour, a corbelled watchtower overlooking the courtyard, and the remnants of a barbican pierced for firearms. The site still shows the defensive adjustments made in the late Middle Ages, when culverins and arquebuses replaced earlier weapons.
