What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le château est d'origine ancienne, certaines de ses voûtes sont antérieures au 11e siècle. Les premiers seigneurs connus remontent au 13e siècle. Durant les guerres de Religion, Guillaume de Guilhot, chef local du parti réformé, s'empara de nombreuses places fortes et accumula une fortune qui lui permit de remanier son château et d'en faire une importante forteresse. Au début du 18e siècle, l'édifice fut transformé en caserne puis en prison. A la Révolution, le château est pillé et vendu à différents propriétaires. L'édifice se présente comme un hexagone irrégulier flanqué à chacun de ses angles d'une tour. Bien que l'on y trouve encore des voûtes remontant au-delà du 11e siècle, il a pris son aspect actuel au 16e siècle. La façade principale est ornée d'un riche décor sculpté datant de cette époque. L'intérieur conserve un intéressant ensemble de cheminées, ainsi qu'un escalier de pierre à rampes droites, orné de motifs sculptés.
