Built in the early fourteenth century to guard the ducal silver mines and control the mountain pass, the stronghold has witnessed six centuries of turbulent history, including combat during both World Wars that left it studded with concrete bunkers. Overgrown with brambles today, the site blends medieval remains with more recent military structures that are not always easy to tell apart.
