To make a day of it

Château du Spitzemberg stands in La Petite-Fosse (Vosges), in the Grand Est region of France. Only part of the building can be visited.

On a sandstone spur of the Ormont massif, at nearly 641 metres above sea level, only the foundations remain of a medieval castle that once watched over the Fave valley. Fighting during the First World War, from 1914 to 1918, heavily altered these remains, which were dug through with French trenches. The site is chiefly valued today for its view over the Vosges foothills, stretching from the Climont to the Hohneck, and for its history as a strategic lookout recorded as early as the 10th century.
