What the French Ministry of Culture records
Un premier château de Clavières a sans doute été construit au XIIIe siècle, la seigneurie apparaissant dans les textes en 1230, comme appartenant à la maison d'Albars. Une maison-forte avec tour d'escalier fut construite ou reconstruite vraisemblablement fin XVe ou début XVIe siècle. La propriété passe par alliance à la famille Salvatge (ou Salvage de Clavières) au XVIe siècle et y reste jusqu'à nos jours. Au milieu du XVIIe siècle, le château est agrandi d'une aile accolée au nord et une chapelle est édifiée à proximité, à l'est. Des communs sont construits à l'ouest au XVIIIe siècle et un jardin classique est aménagé. Au milieu du XIXe siècle, le château est transformé : il est agrandi au sud et, au centre de la façade remodelée et unifiée, est bâtie une rotonde en avancée. Les intérieurs sont redécorés. Les communs (sauf les écuries) sont démolis et reconstruits à l'arrière du château. Les jardins sont aménagés en parc paysager.
